CHAPTER

NINE

“I didn’t want to say anything yesterday because you were so mad, but,” Felicia stopped talking to sip her mimosa refill. Sometimes, I wanted to strangle her. “I saw Eric with a girl at the café.”

My heart dropped, but I was too ashamed to admit it. Especially because I’d been making such a big deal about Tegan’s gross admission. Even if he hadn’t slept with her, he was sleeping with someone else, so what did it matter to me.

Probably, that’s what he wanted to tell me the day at the café but didn’t. “Well, what do I care about that.” Trying to act like I didn’t care, I shrugged it off, but deep down, I did care. A lot. Mad at everyone and everything for no reason, I said, “Eric and I are rebuilding our friendship, and that’s all.”

“Sure,” Lexi said, “and I’m the freaking Pope.”

“No, really. There’s nothing between us and–”

“Oh, stop it, Eva. You’ve never been a good liar, and I can see right through you. Okay, so what if Eric has a new girl, so what if Tegan ruined yet another thing for you? You’re a bad bitch, and the only one who can’t see it is you. So, stop feeling sorry for yourself and go for what you want, and if that’s Eric, then. Go. Get. Him.”

“It’s not that, Lexi. You just don’t understand–”

“You think we don’t understand, but we do. And I get it. I hate Tegan probably more than you. That bitch has everything I’ve ever wanted, and she got it in months when it’s taken me years—years—to get even close to it. I get it, trust me.”

“I hate Tegan, too,” Felicia said, her cheeks flush thanks to the unlimited mimosas. “That fucking bitch was so mean to Eric,” she said, and I couldn’t help but laugh a little, because it was obvious the mimosas had gone to her head. Had it been any other brunch date, I’d be just the same, but I’d allowed things that didn’t matter get to me. Once again. Dammit.

Instead of being flush-cheeked drunk, I was worrying about Tegan. “She betrayed me in the worst way possible and broke our entire friendship over her selfishness. And she just won’t stop coming for me when I’ve done nothing to her. So, I’m sorry if you think you hate her, Lexi, but you have no idea what she’s done to me. When I say it’s not about Eric, I mean it.”

“Good,” Felicia said. “Because Eric’s new girlfriend is buff as hell, and I’m sure she could kick your ass in two seconds flat.”

“Oh, my fucking god,” I said, mad at everyone. “It’s not about Eric!”

“Sure, Eva. Sure.”
